When you think of the UNC basketball program over the past five years, who are some of the first names that come to mind?
For me, it’s RJ Davis. A fifth-year guard who’s the unofficial captain of the 2024-2025 Tar Heels, RJ originally came to Chapel Hill during the COVID-altered 2020-2021 campaign.
RJ was part of the 2021-2022 squad that engineered a miraculous run to the 2022 NCAA Tournament Championship against Kansas, a 2022-2023 squad that fell extremely short of expectations, plus last year’s team that watched its season end against Alabama in the Sweet 16.
During Davis’ final game at the Dean Dome – tonight, Saturday, March 8 against archrival Duke, he’s adding a record to his already-storied college basketball career.
RJ is playing in his 170th ACC game. This breaks a tie with former teammate Armando Bacot, who holds North Carolina’s all-time record for rebounds and double-doubles, for most ACC games played in UNC history.

Davis, the 2024 ACC Player of the Year, leads the Tar Heels with 17.2 points per game this year. Many might say RJ is having a “down” year, but anything will be downhill from last season.
Luckily for North Carolina, guards Elliot Cadeau and Seth Trimble improved their offensive games. Ian Jackson is the scoring punch UNC so desperately needs, Drake Powell can add 10 points on any given night, while Jae’Lyn Withers and Ven-Allen Lubin are playing their best basketball of the season.
Hopefully for Davis, he’ll get to play a lot longer than the impending ACC Tournament. Regardless of when Davis’ Tar Heels career ends, we’re extremely thankful he chose to play college basketball in Chapel Hill.
