When Elliot Cadeau committed to North Carolina in December 2022, there was an excitement permeating the program that I hadn’t seen in several years.

Fans didn’t hold those feelings on March 25, when Cadeau entered the transfer portal after two seasons as North Carolina’s starting point guard. Cadeau would easily reclaim his starting spot on the 2025-2026 Tar Heels’ squad, but I can’t blame him for wanting to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Six days after Cadeau entered the transfer portal, we know his next destination. On Monday (March 31), Cadeau announced his commitment to play basketball for Dusty May and the Michigan Wolverines.

Six days after Cadeau entered the transfer portal, we know his next destination. On Monday (March 31), Cadeau announced his commitment to play basketball for Dusty May and the Michigan Wolverines.

Cadeau’s commitment is the second time in three years a former UNC player chose to continue his college career in Ann Arbor. Caleb Love initially committed to Michigan in April 2023, but decommitted and chose the Arizona Wildcats that May.

Cadeau showcased noticeable improvement during North Carolina’s 2024-2025 campaign, which ended in a shocking NCAA Tournament berth. Despite experiencing turnover issues throughout the year, Cadeau averaged career highs of 9.4 points and 6.2 assists per game, the latter ranking 17th in the country.

If I’m Cadeau, May is exactly the coach I want to play for. May took the Wolverines to the Sweet 16 in his first year at the helm, one season removed from arguably the worst in program history.

With Cadeau gone, the Tar Heels have a major hole to fill at point guard. My vote is to let Trimble run the point, but UNC also has combo guards Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis coming in the 2025 recruiting class. Hubert Davis also needs to get a portal guard.
