Did he make the right decision?
North Carolina received some interesting news on Wednesday when freshman Drake Powell declared for the NBA Draft.
Tar Heel fans have outpoured various reactions following the report. Some expected the once top-15 high school recruit to always be a one-and-done, and found the announcement unsurprising. Others thought he was poised for a sophomore year in Chapel Hill. The large majority, regardless of side, are wondering the answer to the big question: what’s next?
According to reports, Powell is maintaining his college eligibility while going through the NBA Draft process, but all signs — his word choice and reaction from his teammates on social media — point to UNC needing to go back to the transfer portal to replace the wing spot.
Powell averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in his freshman year. As many have pointed out, the numbers don’t speak one-and-done. His frame, athleticism, and potential, though, certainly do. Powell shot 37.9 percent from three in 2024-25, a respectable rate from a freshman wing and one that with his physical traits, will get scouts attention.
But where will Powell be selected?
That’s the million dollar question that his camp and NBA scouts will hope to find out over the next month as he goes through the pre-draft process.
While we wait, let’s see where Powell is projected to be chosen in the 2025 NBA Draft, which takes place on Jun. 25, 2025.
Earlier mock drafts, dating back to early last season, had Powell nearing the top-15. Because he didn’t jump off the page as a surefire first rounder this season, many mock drafts removed his name. But following his official announcement, various outlets have begun to weigh in on where Powell may fall.
ESPN’s most recent entry projects Powell taken as the first pick of the second round to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Multiple mock drafts have Powell selected by the Orlando Magic in the middle of the second round, as some see him as a potential fit in the scheme of head coach Jamahl Mosley. Sports Illustrated’s latest mock slots Powell at pick No. 46 to the Sacramento Kings. Many big boards, who are just getting word of Powell’s official declaration, show him in the 50s and 60s.
The next few weeks are pivotal for Powell’s stock. Oftentimes, draft projection takes a serious turn when working out and meeting with teams. It’s hard to believe that with Powell’s potential, he would find himself falling between now and draft day. Based on his decision, and his comments about being “100%” focused on his step to a professional career, it’s fair to say Powell is preparing to receive serious interest, and be selected high.
