The North Carolina Tar Heels made an announcement on Wednesday concerning their schedule in the 2025-26 college basketball season.
In a post on Instagram, the blue blood program revealed their conference opponents in the next campaign. Of course, the Tar Heels will play the Duke Blue Devils in Chapel Hill and in Durham, which is not surprising given how massive that rivalry is.
However, what’s surprising to learn is that North Carolina and the NC State Wolfpack will only play each other once. The lone meeting will take place in Raleigh, which also means that for the first time since 1919, North Carolina will not have a home game versus NC State.
Fans were quick to notice of that notable break of tradition that ran for over 100 years.
“Not playing NC State twice is wild,” said a fan on Instagram.
Another one said: “Duke and NC State should be the schools we automatically play twice every year.”
From a commenter: “State not having to play in the dean dome is crazy, one of the best home games every season for a fan to be at.”
“Since when we don’t play state twice😭 this that bs,” a social media user posted.
Via a different commenter: “Playing Syracuse twice but State once is weird.”
Said another: “No home game against NC State. Wow this conference realignment stuff sucks
